Within the Town of Wilna a village known as Carthage is situated. Having an approximate population of 3,700 according to the year 2000 statistic, this village is a part of the Jefferson County, New York. The location of the Village of Carthage is at the eastern portion of Watertown and is at the southeast town line. The area got its name from the historic place named Carthage in North Africa. The first community was formed in the year 1798 and was formerly called "Long Falls". The community was organized in the year 1841 and is the sole village among the twelve villages in New York that was organized under a charter unlike the others which were organized or re-organized under the Village Law's conditions. The Champion Hill which is situated in the middle of Carthage and Watertown is the home of the almost all of the Watertown local television stations.
