Clayton is one of the towns in the county of Jefferson, New York that was named after a political officer who came from Delaware, John M. Clayton. It is populated with about 4,800 residents according to the 2000 statistics and consists of a hamlet named Clayton. Both the village and town of Clayton are located at the northern area of Watertown. In 1801 the original occupants came and settle in the area forming the town in the year 1833 from portions of Orleans and Lyme Town. Its village became the capital railroad stop for the Thousand Islands resort area at the time of its peak. Several recreational area today are available within the town like the Canoe Picnic Point State Park which can only be reach by boat and the Cedar Point State Park which is located at the west town line. The town has also museums which are the Antique Boat Museum and the Clayton Opera House. |
