The city of Cortland is located in the county of Cortland, in the state of New York, United States. As of the Millennium Statistical studies the area population was 18,740. Then city is the capital of Cortland County. The area is beside the west boundary of the county that encompasses by the Town of Cortlandville. Cortland is along the ancient Military Tract of the Central New York and the city name is come from New York’s first Lieutenant ambassador which is Pierre Van Cortland. Cortland is established in 1791 and in 1853 became a village, and was established as a city in 1900 and being the 41st city in New York State. During the county was develop in 1808, Cortland compete to the other villages and beat them and achieve the status of being the capital city. Cortland City is also called “Crown City” because the city is a plain area assembled by the union of seven valleys, and found in around 1,130 feet upon sea level that make the area as the highest city to crown the state. Forty stars that serves as the 40 cities established before Cortland, encompasses the state and Crown on the legal Seal of the City. The Crown’s seven points made seven valleys describing Cortland’s seven neighborhood valleys. The 41st star in the innermost area of the Crown determine Cortland as the nearest established City to the geological center if New York. The dominant industry in Cortland in the 19th and 20th century is the wire drawing mill of the Wickwire brothers, denotes for its manufacturing of wire hardware cloth to make as window screens. The amount of their wealth is in tribute to a pair of wonderful mansions, the Victorian medieval home of Chester Wickwire became a House Museum and Center for Victorian Arts at the same time in 1912 the house of Charles Wickwire is recognized as the Alumni House of the SUNY Cortland that operated by the Association of the Alumni of the SUNY Cortland.
