The capital of the Chemung County, New York that is situated at the south-central portion of the province and is encircled on its three sides by the Elmira Town is the city of Elmira. In 1779, the Sullivan Expedition cross over the region and encountered a battle with the British troops at the Battle of Newton at the southern part of the present city. After the war was settled in the area of Elmira, the original occupant in the region was Captain Abraham Miller. He constructed a small house after quitting but just prior to the Revolutionary war. The population of this city increased in 1950 because of the improvement of the railroads and manufacturing industry but declined at present due to the deterioration of both industries. At present, the main manufacturer company is Anchor Glass Container Corporation which is a producer of glass containers and various colored glasses. The city also has several schools, television and radio studios, and medical facilities which serve the community. |
