Part of the "South towns" of the Erie County that has a population of about 27,700 residents according to the year 2000 census is the town of Orchard Park. It is located at the southern part of Buffalo, New York and consists of a village which is also called Orchard Park. In the year 1803, a couple named Didymus C. Kinney and Phebe (Hartwell) bought a piece of land and constructed a cottage somewhere in the southwestern corner of the area. The following year, Quaker immigrants started to settle within the area. In 1850, the town detached from the Hamburg Town and was initially called Ellicott which was named after a representative of the Holland Land Company, Joseph Ellicott. But after a few months the town's was renamed to East Hamburg and in 1934, the town's name was again changed into Orchard Park after the village's name which was recommended by a local school teacher. At present, the town has several schools, interesting spots, and recreation area to serve the community. The town is also known for some of its food like the Taffy's Hot Dog Stand and Eckl's Restaurant which serve roast beef on kummelweck rolls. |
