Poughkeepsie is a city in Dutchess County, New York, United States. The city is the capital city of Dutchess County and can be found in the Hudson River Valley in the middle among New York City and Albany. The city name is come from a Native American term which means “the reed coated lodge by the little-water place” that determines the small river support into the Hudson River, southern region of the current downtown area. Poughkeepsie is called as “The Queen City of the Hudson”. In 1980s up to the 1990s the city affected from the serious socioeconomic chaos that determines as a sign for the collapse city in the Hudson Valley. The current efforts at waterfront and Main Street renaissance dignify Poughkeepsie for a potential improvement. Poughkeepsie is the biggest capital city of the Poughkeepsie-Newburgh-Middletown, New York Metropolitan Statistical Area that involves all the Dutchess and Orange counties. This Two counties had a total area population of 621,517 as of the Millennium Statistical Studies. The approximate population of the area is around 669,915 as of July 2 years ago. Poughkeepsie-Newburgh-Middletown is a constituent of the bigger New York-Newark-Bridgeport, NY-NJ-CT-PA- Mixed Statistical Area. The area of Poughkeepsie was established by a New Netherland Dutchman, which is Barent Baltus in 1659. It was developed in 1687 by the help of his son in the person of Baltus Barent van Kleeck, who constructed the historic house which is the first house at that time during 1702.
