One of the cities in the County of Rensselaer, New York that is located to its western boundary is Rensselaer. It has an approximate population of 7,761 residents according to the year 2000 statistics and is situated at the River of Hudson exactly on the other side of the Albany County. The city is outlined by two towns of the county, which are the North Greenbush and the East Greenbush. The population of Rensselaer City is made up of carious races including Caucasians, African Americans, Native Americans, Asian, Pacific Islander, and Hispanic or Latino. The name of the city was taken from the first owner of the area Kiliaen van Rensselaer who came from New Netherland. This city is initially called Greenbush and was a portion of the Rensselaerwyck manor. It has a village known as Greenbush, which is located inside the town that is also known as Greenbush was organized in the year 1815. In the year 1897, the city formerly known as Greenbush was commissioned and was renamed into Rensselaer. Base on the census, the city of Rensselaer is measured to have a total area of 3.3 square miles where 3.0 square miles is compose of land and the remaining 0.3 square miles is compose of water. The historic Fort Crailo or also known as Yankee Doodle House, which is a brick walled chateau, is located in this city. The British utilized many times the area within the chateau and colonial troops as their campground. The city of Rensselaer is served by a national passenger rail system, which is known as the Amtrak where it passes through the Albany-Rensselaer Rail Station.
