One of the cities in the county of Erie, New York that has a population of about 16,200 according to the year 2000 statistics is the city of Tonawanda. This city is located opposite the Erie Canal from Niagara County. Tonawanda City started as a small village having Henry Anguish as one of occupants who constructed his log house in 1808 and a business establishment that serves drinks in the year 1811. His business was located at the entrance of Tonawanda Creek where it drains into the Niagara River. The small village gradually multiplied until the year 1825 when the Erie Canal was opened. It gave both sides of Tonawandas an economic opportunity because of the lumber industry. By the end of the 19th century, the industry has leaded them to become an outstanding lumber processing center. It was organized as a suburb in the mid 19th century and in 1904 became a city. Today, the city annually celebrates Canal Festival for a week to commemorate the history of their place. They also have museums that display the region's lumber industry and Erie Canal history. |
